DeGRAFF – Riverside junior Dustin Proffitt will have the unique chance to showcase his baseball talents in front of former and current Major League Baseball players when he travels to Bradenton, Fla. for a winter tournament at the end of this month.
“This opportunity means a lot to me,” Proffitt said. “I have never had a experience like this before, and I am very anxious for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
To punch his ticket to Florida, Proffitt said he tried out for a spot in the tournament with over 10,000 kids throughout the country. In the end, only 208 athletes were chosen with Proffitt being one of them as he was selected to play with the Under Armour Baseball Factory National Team.
Proffitt’s team will compete in the Baseball Factory Christmas Camp and Tournament at Pirate City on Dec. 27-30. According to Proffitt, 35 former Baseball Factory participants played in the MLB postseason in 2011 including the likes of Josh Hamilton and Roy Halladay.
“I will be playing in front of former pros and today’s pros as well as pro scouts and college scouts to help get my name out there more,” said Proffitt, who noted he has been receiving recruitment letters from Division I and II colleges and will be visiting Radford University in Virginia this spring. “This has been a big goal of mine to play in something like this and make a major team because my goals after high school are go to a good college, get an education and play baseball with the hope of making it to the major league one day.
“I am very proud to be representing Ohio and most of all, the communities of Quincy and DeGraff,” he added.
While in Florida, Proffitt won’t be training and playing in any old facility. He will be experiencing the life of a major leaguer by enjoying the spring training facilities of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Proffitt will not only play on a field graced by professional ballplayers every spring, but he will also be eating, sleeping and lifting weights in a major league facility.
“I really can’t describe how it feels to be staying in the same rooms and training in the same facilities as some of the Pirate greats,” he said. “I’m looking forward to meeting all of the players and talking with some of baseball’s greats just like they’re one of my friends when we’re back at the clubhouse.”
In order to fulfill this dream, Proffitt is looking for donations to help with expenses totaling $3,000, he said. Those individuals or businesses in the community wanting to help Proffitt can do so by calling him at 937-441-8372 or his parents, Roger and Phyllis Proffitt, at 937-441-1035.

TIPP CITY – Seven Indian Lake grapplers punched their tickets to the district meet during the Division II Tippecanoe Sectional Wrestling Tournament held Saturday at Tippecanoe High School.
As a team, the Lakers finished the 13-team sectional in fourth place with 131.5 points. Graham, as expected, cruised to the sectional title with 357 points, while Kenton Ridge (149) placed second and Oakwood (139) took third.
While the Lakers were unable to claim any individual titles, two wrestlers did managed to earn runner-up honors.
In the 119-pound weight class, Indian Lake’s Heath Lange took second, losing in the title match to Graham’s Micah Jordan via a pin. Lange won his first three matches with pins.
In the 135-pound weight class, Laker L.J. Henderson placed second, falling to Graham’s Case Garrison in the championship match by a major decision (19-5). Henderson won his first two matches via pins.

URBANA – If not for state and national powerhouse Graham, the Indian Lake varsity wrestling team would have been crowned Central Buckeye Conference/Mad River Division champions after its performance on Saturday in the CBC Tournament.
The Lakers, who had five grapplers reach the finals, placed second overall in the conference and second in the MRD with 170.5 points.
“I am really proud of our wrestlers,” ILHS coach Scott Tressler said. “They did a great job on Saturday, and we were able to get a great start to the ‘Month of Champions.’”
As expected, Graham ran away with the tournament with a total of 382 points.
The third-highest score belonged to Kenton Ridge (164.5), which won the Kenton Trail Division, while Ben Logan, a member of the MRD, took fourth overall with 143 points.
The highlight of the tournament for Indian Lake was the performance of senior Chris Schulz, who won a CBC title in the 130-pound weight class.
“I was really happy for Chris Schulz being a CBC champion,” Tressler said. “He has really allowed the matches to come to him and has not been pressing anything. It will be exciting to see what he can do in the next three weeks.”
Reaching the finals and placing second for the Lakers were Tyrone Nadeau (103), Heath Lange (119), L.J. Henderson (135) and Kurtis Gibbons (140).
“We had five guys total in the finals, which was great,” Tressler said. “Although Tyrone Nadeau, Heath Lange, L.J. Henderson and Kurtis Gibbons all had tough losses, they wrestled really well, and they will have the opportunity to wrestle the guys they lost to again in the next couple weeks.”
Also placing for ILHS were Christian Kindle (112, fifth), Calvin Davis (145, fifth) and Chandler Golden (160, third).

BELLEFONTAINE – Despite entering a Feb. 9 Central Buckeye Conference crossover varsity girls basketball game with just five wins each, rivals Indian Lake and Bellefontaine turned in an exciting double-overtime contest in which the visiting Lakers outlasted the Chieftains by a score of 52-49.

“It’s was just a classic county battle,” ILHS coach Chris Burden said. “We talked about heart, wanting it and playing with a lot of passion, and the girls showed all three of those tonight. I told them, defense is going to win the game. We just hung our hat on playing good, solid defense and taking care of the basketball.”

“This was the first time we put together a complete game of effort and hustle,” Bellefontaine coach Bryan Hogan added. “We didn’t have any letdown physically, but mentally is where we had our big letdown tonight.”

After trailing for much of the game, Indian Lake found itself behind 30-29 with less than 20 seconds left in regulation. With the game on the line, the Lakers got the ball inside to senior Christina Knief, who drew a foul and buried 1 of 2 free throws to tie the game up with 14.9 seconds to go.

Bellefontaine had a chance to win the game in regulation, but sophomore Regan Price missed a 15-foot jump shot just before the buzzer, sending the game into the first of two overtimes.

During the first four minutes of extra time, Indian Lake used an 8-2 run to take what appeared to be a comfortable 38-32 lead with 1:10 left on the clock.

In need of a spark, Bellefontaine turned to freshman Jazmyn Haley and she responded. Haley scored seven points during a 9-3 run by the Chieftains, and with just a second left on the clock, Haley knocked down a game-tying 3-pointer from the top of the arc to send the game into double overtime.
