LEWISTOWN – Most first-year coaches spend the majority of the season getting to know the ins and outs of their teams, but considering his familiarity with the Indian Lake girls basketball program having coached the junior varsity team, Tim McMahon has decided to hit the court running in his first season as head varsity coach. “We are changing some stuff, but they seem to be catching on,” McMahon said. “It’s a transition, but they seem to be taking it pretty well.” With seven returning letterwinners as his disposal, McMahon chose to shake things up a bit for the 2012-2013 campaign by installing a new offense. “We are going to run the motion offense (instead of the set offense),” he said. “We are going to try to get up and down the floor. Basically, we want to push the ball up the floor.” McMahon said he decided to change the offensive scheme after taking into consideration his team’s strengths. “I think we have pretty good quickness and shooting,” he said. “We are pretty athletic overall, so that’s why I wanted to run the motion offense.” The seven returning letterwinners being asked to learn a new offense this season include seniors Mikaela Oyer, Claire Maier, Leslie Reichert and Jordan Keckler; juniors Haley Boberg and Allison Knief; and sophomore Sydney Miller. McMahon said he will being leaning on leadership from his seniors, especially Oyer. “She is a four-year starter, and she is getting looks from colleges,” he said. “She has to be our go-to person.” Newcomers to the varsity squad are juniors Ashley Franks and Hannah Dye, sophomore Taylor Dixon and freshman Lindsey Chismar. “I feel with our offense, a lot of girls can step up and score for us,” McMahon said. “I think we can go seven or eight deep.” |

DeGRAFF – With a half dozen players back from the 2011-2012 squad that finished 7-14, Riverside coach Jeremy Allen will be relying on experience as the Pirates look to return to their winning ways this season. Returning to the court for Riverside are seniors Morgan Robison (guard), Mara Ledley (guard) and Karli Castle (forward) as well as sophomores Monica Hurley (guard), Brooke Hickey (guard) and Chelsea Giles (forward). “I have six returning letterwinners from last year, so they know what to expect and how to handle adversity, ” Allen said. “It’s just a matter of executing.” Newcomers to the varsity squad include junior Elizabeth McGowen (center), sophomore Molly Harshbarger (forward) and freshmen Taylor Stevens (guard) and Aubrey Stephens (forward). While last season was a struggle at times for Riverside, the Pirates did start to show flashes of coming together as a squad as the year went on, and Allen is hopeful his core group of returners will build on that late-season success. “We struggled at the start last year, but we got some momentum going toward the end,” he said. “Hopefully, that momentum carries on into this season.” If the Pirates are to turn things around in 2012-2013, Allen said the keys will be limiting turnovers, rebounding and shooting a higher percentage as a team. “Hanging on to the basketball and shooting are our two biggest weaknesses,” he said. “In the past with this group, we haven’t handle a lot of pressure very well, but we’ve gotten better. With our shooting, we are either really good or we are really bad. We have to be more consistent in the shooting aspect.” |

DeGRAFF – In order to improve on last season’s seven wins, Riverside varsity boys basketball coach has the 2012-2013 squad focused on two areas in particular – limiting turnovers and playing team defense. “We have two phrases we are living by this year,” Epps said. “One is ‘points per possession,’ which means we can’t have turnovers. “The second one is ‘we can’t let our teammate’s man score.’ Everybody has to go to the ball. We are working very hard to make sure nobody penetrates the lane. We are going to try to keep it out of the paint and make teams beat us from the outside,” he added. As for the team’s makeup, Epps has just two returning letterwinners at his disposal in senior Luke Greene (guard) and junior Dalton Bollinger (post). Newcomers to the varsity squad are seniors Dallas Daniels (post), Triston Mechling (post), Jake Herron (wing), Grant Miller (post) and Jonathon Wheeler (wing); junior Kolt Shough (guard); sophomore Tanner Lane (wing) and freshman Landon Kelsey (wing). With plenty of big bodies at his disposal, Epps said post play should be one of the team’s strengths this season. “We’ve got three people that we can interchange at the post, so if we get into foul trouble or somebody gets tired, we are interchangeable at the post area which is a good plus,” he said. “We are hoping another strength is our team chemistry,” Epps added. “They are buying into what we are trying to do, and they are working with each other.” |

LEWISTOWN – An efficient offensive performance by Indian Lake on Friday resulted in a convincing 52-7 defeat of Greenon in Central Buckeye Conference/Mad River Division football. The victory helped the Lakers achieve something the program hasn’t enjoyed since 2007 - a four-game winning streak. “The guys are playing with a lot of confidence, and hopefully, we can continue to build on this momentum,” ILHS coach Dave Coburn said. The Indian Lake offense dominated the first half of play, scoring a touchdown on its first five possessions. In fact, the Lakers were on the verge of converting all of their first-half possessions into touchdowns, but the second-quarter clock ran out on the home team inside the red zone. “I thought our line and backs blocked well, and our backs ran hard,” Coburn said. The Lakers jumped out to a 19-0 advantage after one quarter of play thanks to a 45-yard TD run by Chris Teague (missed extra point), a 4-yard TD run by L.J. Henderson and a 30-yard TD scamper by Henderson (missed extra point). After a 1-yard TD run by Hunter Vance increased Indian Lake’s lead to 26-0, the Knights were able to put together their only scoring drive of the game that culminated in a 7-yard TD run by Jason Kending. “Defensively, I felt we did a nice job taking away their playmakers for the most part,” Coburn said. “Other than the one drive Greenon put together, I felt we controlled things defensively.” The Lakers answered Greenon’s lone score of the game with the final score of the first half, a 12-yard TD run by Montel Morgan that put the home team ahead 33-7 at the half. Indian Lake continued to turn each possession into points in the second half. On their first drive of the third quarter, the Lakers found pay dirt on a 2-yard run by Morgan to go ahead 39-7 following a missed PAT. The next offensive possession by ILHS turned out to be the last for the varsity unit and ended in a 19-yard TD run by Vance that increased the home team’s lead to 46-7. With a comfortable lead, ILHS coach Dave Coburn turned the game over to the junior varsity squad in the fourth quarter. During the final 12 minutes of play, the Lakers were able to push across one more score – a 8-yard TD run by Kurt Crockett (PAT missed). |
